There is a thickly sliced bread, with each slice about an inch thick,  

which is referred to here as "Texas Toast". It is often browned and  

buttered and served with Chicken-fried steak or with breakfast dishes.

 

Is it called that elsewhere?

At the bread store {sweetheart bakery outlet} there are loaves  called
"Texas Toast" which are  big loaves  thickly cut.  A slice is as large as
your hand.  

You may toast & butter, or butter, cheese it & broil, or make into bread
pudding, as your heart desires . . . .
