Interesting. An earthenware pot, but an *iron* lid. Because the iron  
lid is less likely to crack from placing hot coals on top of it?

Why not an entire pot of iron as well as the lid? It is easier to make  
a flat or dished plate of iron than a deep pot. Perhaps the ceramic  
might even out the heat better than the iron, as well.
