I really like my digital one. I bought mine through Betty Crocker I  
think so I've
had it for years and years.
Amazon sells one like it now.
(Reviews there are not very good but maybe they aren't taking care of  
them. I've not had any trouble
with mine.)

The major feature is that you can set a temperature and it will beep  
when it reaches that desired temperature.
For instance, I'll set it to 302 degrees. It will beep when it reaches  
that temp and I'll pull the
pan off the stove to prevent overcooking of a syrup. Mine seems  
accurate. I have tested it.

I also own a mercury candy thermometer. I gather they still make them  
and they are still
available at places like Ace Hardware. It's not easy to connect to the  
pan.
