I sometimes have trouble with small items trying to escape from the  
little hopper (which is hinged on one side, and sort of held down, but  
not directly attached to the grater drum).

Yes, that appears to be either a Mouli or functionally identical to  

Adamantius (contemplating boiled ham with parsley sauce -- not sure why)
