[Sca-cooks] Fortune Cookies are Not American; was duck sauce?

According to Jennifer 8 Lee, the author of a new book called "The Fortune Cookie Chronicles", fortune cookies originated in Japan in 1878 or earlier.
She was interviewed on The Splendid Table last Sunday.  Here is an article that states her findings:
