I was going to an event yesterday talking about the nut brown ale
discussion, and had a thought:
In the 16th and early 17th C, could "nut brown" in "nut brown ale" refer
specifically to ale in which spices has been added? The Players Song seems
largely to praise the effect of the toast, nutmeg, and ginger as part of
the drink, and toast and nutmeg added to a palish beverage would impart a
nut brown color to it.
Probably not, but it seemed an interesting thought worth sharing.
