Yes. But really, there is a system to it.

Fighter, Knight, Count, Duke...

Notice at each step the title gets shorter and easier to spell and  
say. This is because each step takes more blows to the head to  
achieve, so the SCA heralds took this into account when setting up  
the rank structure...
