ANNALS OF DESSERT about Baumkuchen and spit cakes. Hardly a lover of  
sweets, the writer does have intermittent longings for one cake that  
was a favorite indulgence until it disappeared from the New York scene  
about twenty years ago. What haunts her memory is the Baumkuchen, a
