If I am not mistaken the occurrence of maize pollen is used as a dating
marker for sediments in North America. If maize were common in a particular
locality elsewhere in the world, its pollen could be found in sediments
deposited at that time in that place. Find the pollen, date the sediments
by another method and you would have a strong link to that time and place.
Perhaps the NSF would be interested?
