I am not sure if this book counts but there are a series of books that have been inspired by scenes from the Bible. One is Pilates Wife and the other is the Red Tent. I'll have to get back on the author's name.
The authors took a smidgin of history and minor Biblical characters and wrote a fictional tale. I have enjoyed the books but historical accuracy- questionable.
There is a Woman's Group using the foundation of the Red Tent has a source for female empowerment.

I recently purchased the most recent edition in the Temeraire series, *Tongues
of Serpents* (excellent book, by the way). The cover notes about the author
mentioned the fact that Jackson had purchased the options for the first 5 of
the books. Can't wait! Just asked my resident expert about SF sites, etc
and he said nothing has come out since the announcement of the purchase, and
that Jackson is currently working on *The Hobbit.*
