Yamina asked: Was nutmeg used in  period as a mind-altering substance?

 

Thomas Jefferson used it.  I'll try to dig out the reference. 

 

Almost any aromatic used to excess has funny effects.  I was taught by my
grandmother, as a small child, exactly how to dose peppermint oil in water
for indigestion, with the warning that it could be poisonous.  But that goes
back to when children were taught things and not wrapped in a safe plastic
bubble (a small rant).
