The soapstone variety found in Scandinavian has asbestos qualities.
Andre Sodeburg, (sp- hard to add the Swedish spelling on the Blackberry)  has been researching and putting on demos on how the Vikings made the clay molds for bronze casting. He has some preliminary discovery on the use of asbestos in the clays..
It is possible!

This may have not been the only flameproof tablecloth around and asbestos was mined and used in other ways in period as well.

There was also Charlemagne's famous fire proof tablecloth amongst other items.
