It was much stronger than the Haiti quake.  8.8 vs. 7.0.  The
(relatively) good news is that Chile was much better prepared for such
a quake.  Reported death tolls are under 150, and the worst damage is
in the south of the country, away from Santiago, where Suey lives.
Though every death is a tragedy, it could have been far, *far* worse.

A lot of power and phone lines are down, so even if Suey and her
family are unaffected by the earthquake, she may not have Internet
connection.
