Hmmm... by that logic I would suggest that they may have been optimized for 
wood, a less difficult medium, perhaps via chip carving?  Are there extant 
examples?  I know that history recounts that runes were carved into "scorn 
poles".  The prime example of such being the one Egil erected regarding Eric 
Bloodaxe.
