The Chicago Weekly is an alternative newspaper run largely by students, 
which suggests that their editorial staff isn't quite what you would find at 
a major metro paper.  You also need to consider the difference between 
filler and major news stories.  Big news stories get the research, editorial 
meetings, and the like.  Filler gets read and blue penciled by one editor 
then trimmed to fill unused column space.
