There are these volumes by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann
(They feature more international and modern recipes than the slow
cooker recipes that
came out 40 years ago.)
Not Your Mothers Slow Cooker Cookbook
Not Your Mothers Slow Cooker Recipes For Entertaining

There are a number of other cookbooks.

My slow cooker has an auto shift function which allows it to heat up
to high.
Then it shifts down to low. I don't have any trouble cooking stews for
8 hours or more.
Cooks Country just did an article on slow cookers and what to look for
in their August 2010 issue.
