Many of the mordants used in the dying process are mineral or metal based and will also alter and change the color of whatever dye you are making. The mixture of metals will also make the cast iron pot unuseable for food.
I have seperate pots for dye and food.

Depending on what I'm doing, I either use a 5 gallon stainless steel
stock pot for dyeing, or else heat up the water first, mix the dye,
and put it in my 25 or 50 gallon plastic barrels I have for that
purpose. I wouldn't use cast iron for that for several reasons. First,
the iron would tend to affect the dyes (although it would be fine for
blacks). Second, once used, it would be almost impossible to entirely
remove the dye residue from the pot, which means that the pot would
either have to be reserved for dyeing, or else you'd need to take your
chances with eating out of it. And finally, because the instructions
for most commercial dyes SAY to use stainless steel, undoubtedly
because of these reasons.

Granted, that in an SCA context, the dyes being used are quite likely
to be homemade from various materials, I'd still follow basic modern
dyeing practices and safety suggestions. While a black made from steel
wool soaked in vinegar and mixed with oak galls isn't likely to be a
problem, there are lots of other ingredients that could be.
