With a large academic library and enough time, you could do subject  
searches
on Girolamo Benzoni looking for academic papers, reviews, and  
dissertations that might
discuss his reputation. There's 400 plus entries under Benzoni,  
Girolamo in Worldcat.
164 entries in Jstor. Then there are all those other databases. It's  
rather a major undertaking.
