I consider myself a picky eater:
I don't want high fructose corn syrup in my comestibles.
I don't like to eat things with artificial butter flavor (one reason
i am never going to eat in an Applebees again, once was one time too
many, the mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables were all saturated
with artificial butter flavor, patooey! I asked from some without and
they looked at me like i had two heads.)
I won't eat spongy white bread, although it is fun to make little
sculptures of it mixed with white glue.
I only drink Starbucks when there isn't a place to get real coffee
nearby (i.e., on long freeway trips; a cup of Starbuck Coffee with a
shot or two of espresso is still weaker than a cup of Peets, which is
my usual choice.)
And i only eat fast food when under extreme duress, and only from 2
or 3 companies. (no KFC U, Taco Hell, Micky D, Burger Grunge, Jack in
the Back, etc.); on my long road trips, i pack food in a cooler to
eat for a few days.

The people you describe don't sound like picky eaters to me. They
sound closed minded and lacking in any sense of culinary adventure.
