Funny this topic has been brought up again. I am studying biodynamic gardening and I have been receiving seed catalogs for heirloom and biodynamic plants. In two they have two purple heirloom carrots. Now, I always thought the purple carrots were breed out in favor of the orange. But, by definition an heirloom seed must be of the original stock or the oldest known variety. 
Looking forward to trying them out in my garden.
