If you go to the website for the Victoria and Albert Museum you can  
search the collection
and discover hundreds of spice cupboards, containers, boxes, holders,  
etc.
I think you'll discover that storage might depend upon the wealth of  
the household.

Also--Take a look at the photos that have been posted from the Tudor  
Cooks
at Hampton Court Palace.
