Johnnae sent:
"In later times, however, the composition of the Wassail Bowl was ale,
nutmeg, sugar, toast, and rousted crabs or apples, which has also
received the more comfortable name of Lamb's Wool. The contents of the
bowl are specified in the first verse of "The Wassaillera" Song,"
siill sung on New Year's Eve in Gloucestershire..."

Just be aware (in case you didn't know) that "roasted crabs" are not a
crustacean but crabapples. I could just see a neophyte historical cook
putting crabs in their shell into the mulled wine. If not roasted
properly, might the cook change from a historical cook to a hysterical cook?
