Believe her!  Johnnae is very knowledgeable! Some wooden trenchers have 
a small indentation in one corner which is said to have been used for a 
pinch of salt.

The period references to bread trenchers don't seem to have any 
indication that such an indentation or depression was carved in them. 
They are just listed as certain thicknesses of several-day-old bread cut 
into slices and laid in particular patterns before the diner. Salt would 
have been put in a small container (less fancy than the ones that are in 
the link that Johnnae sent) for each "mess" to share.
