<<< A province is the same as a barony in terms of size and officer
requirements, but it does not have a Baron and/or Baroness. They are
common here in the West, particularly in the Mists. I think the Crown
Province of Ostgardr (NY) and the Province of Treegirtsea (Chicago)
are the only ones outside the West.>>>
Oh! Thank you. The only SCA province that I was aware of was
Ostgardr. I hadn't realized Treegirtsea was also, although I've heard
of the group before.

Which are the groups in the West which are provinces? I do remember
hearing that most people in the Mists played at a principality level
rather than at a baronial level, so this makes more sense now.

I also think that a barony in northern Ansteorra became a province in
the last few years. Moonshadow, perhaps? But when it was announced, I
don't remember a reason for this being given.

I also know that at least one group in Ansteorra that could be a
barony by numbers, has decided to remain a shire to avoid what they
thought would be increased political division if they were to become a
barony.
