I just want to mention this excellent national monument which is well  
worth a visit if you have a car and some time.

Muir Woods National Monument, located just 11 miles north of the  
Golden Gate Bridge.
Upon learning of its dedication in 1908, Mr. Muir declared, "This is  
the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the  
forests of the world."
