I am currently using three programs for three different reasons. Each one is stable and have been around for years.
1. Cozi.com
I use this family oriented site to manage my families activities and menus. It has a great meal planning program that allows you to cut and paste or easily input favorite recipes into the "recipe box." It also allows you to create an immediate shopping list that is easy to edit. The negative: you have to invite or add the people you want to view the site. It is private.
2. Google Blogspot. I use Google Blogspot for both my personal blog and class blog. It is easy to manage and loading recipes can be easy. I have directly written and scanned items directly to both sites. Google Blogspot is free but the templates are limited. Positive: Everyone can see it and have access to it. Negative: Everyone can see it and have access to it.
3. Google Documents:
For people who use Google Mail then this a great resource to share the recipes. However, the recipients must also use Google Mail to use the Document Share. I like Google Document to save documents because I use three different computers during my day and I don't have to save materials on a flash drive. It is saved directly on the server and I can access it any where. Negative: must hold a Google account to access Document Share and it is server based.
I just discovered Mail Chimp for sending out newsletters and mass emails. It takes some time to set up but so far the newsletters have been a huge hit. Everyone can read the newsletters on the various email accounts. Mail Chimp is business oriented but I am sure it can be used for personal use too. The newsletters are easy to create but are based on fixed templates. They can be slightly personalized.
Each one of these programs have been around for a while. Cozi I have been using for 3 years and it just keeps getting better and better. Google Blogspot has become easier over time. I hated it at first. Google Document Share I have mixed emotions.

Oh! I almost forgot. Check out Dropbox. Its free and one of my co-workers uses it to share documents with parents and students.
I have only used it sporadically.
Check out Evernote too.

Let me know what you think.

Subject: [Sca-cooks] Which recipe website do you recommend?

Greetings,

My short question:

If you upload and organize your recipes online  -- and you do *not* have a blog or personal indexable website like medievalcookery or godecookery -- what recipe website do you recommend, and *why*? What works for you, what do you like, what do you not like?

I'm investigating and comparing online recipe sites and other sites, and my criteria are:

* Easy to upload or enter information (I'd prefer not to enter ingredients & amounts in individual fields, since that will take eons longer)
* Website has a reasonably high degree of stability and is expected to still exist in five or so years (I don't want to spend the time entering recipes just to have the site close down in a year)
* Some searchability and organizational functionality, at least on name of recipe
* Open to the public and does not require other people wanting to use these recipes to join/sign up/pay to search for and print off/download a recipe

The back story:
My mother died earlier this month after a brief but acute bout of leukemia. She was a phenomenal cook who made bread nearly every day of her life and taught breadmaking through adult ed and private sessions in her home for the past 40-odd years.

Besides her 45-year-old two-oven six-burner Vulcan stove (which is disassembled in my garage until I can renovate my kitchen to install it), I also brought home her recipe box. (Yes, those were the only two things that were truly precious to me --- can you tell I'm a cook? <gentle smile>)

So, I have this huge box containing *hundreds* of 5x7 recipe cards of all the breads, cookies, pies, cakes, and international cuisines she merrily explored for the past 60 years.

Since so many family, friends, and neighbors in her town would LOVE to have her recipes, I've decided to share them online in a (hopefully) permanent location.

Rather than just paste them one by one into individual pages on my Yahoo website, I'm looking into recipe sites or archives like GoogleDocs to make it 1. easier for me to upload them and 2. easier for folks to find them.

So, suggestions, please?

Many thanks for your thoughts,

Katja
