Let me say that this is the knowledge of tea, not necessarily the drinking 
of tea.  The first commercial shipment of tea of which I have knowledge 
arrived in the Netherlands in 1610.  Tea in general use in Europe is 
somewhat later.

Tea as "A meal or social entertainment at which tea is served" is mid 18th 
century."
