In a dispute with Scotland over ownership of Rathlin Island in 1617, the
Irish maintained in English court that since St. Patrick had banished all
snakes from Ireland, and there were no snakes on Rathlin Island, it followed
that Rathlin was a part of Ireland. The Irish won their case.
