Liutgard asked:
<<< So, I have a question about feasts and the high table. I seem to
remember a discussion about this, some time ago, and I'd like to know if
anyone here remembers it and can confirm or correct my memory. Is it
indeed _not_ ok to serve the high table more or different food than the
rest of the hall, particularly if they have paid the same site/feast
fee? >>>

Correct. The general consensus, and I think SCA rules, say that while you can make the food fancier and have a nicer presentation, if the food comes out of the general feast budget, it needs to be the same for all.

I thought I'd saved some of that conversation, but apparently not. Here is what I have on serving the high table. Here are some ways to honor those at the high table without spending a huge amount on their meal. It is unfair for the head table to get lobster while the rest of us get porridge, even if it is lobster bisque.

Yes, a very non-period viewpoint, but the meal is being paid for by the feasters, not the hosting Noble.

My barony often puts on Royal Luncheons for the Royals and the Nobles at our events. One time I paid for this out of my own pocket. Other times it has been paid for with baronial funds, but after the nobles were finished, what was left over was opened to the populace. I'm still a bit uncomfortable about the latter solution, although I try to make sure that there is enough food that a reasonable portion of the populace gets some.
