Thanks! They are indeed suribachi.  I've a wooden pestle that will work with then just fine.  I'm planning on using them to grind seed spices.

Sounds like a suribachi, a Japanese mortar.  The pestle, surikogi, is wood.

I've a couple of wide oriental bowels, one large one small that have 
patterned ridge striations on the inside. They are high glazed dark brown on 
the outside and on the inner rim. The interior portions, where they are 
striated, are light brown. Anyone have any links regarding such and how they 
are used. I'm assuming that they are used with a wooden pestial(?). Side 
note I scored a Braun sick blender for $5.
