They are white potatoes (patatas). The bill of lading states three medium
barrels of potatoes, oranges and green lemons. The specific document is a
bill of lading for goods shipped from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria by Juan de
Molina to his brother Luis de Quesada in Antwerp. The document was found in
the archives of the notary Lorenzo Palenzuela dated 28 November 1567.

Specific references are: Hawkes, J.G. and Francisco-Ortega, J., "The Early
History of the Potato in Europe," Euphytica 70: 1-7, 1993. Hawkes, J.G. and
Francisco-Ortega, J., "The Potato in Spain During the Late 16th Century,"
Economic Botany 46(1) pp. 86-97. 1992. These papers contain facsimiles of
the original pages.

<<< The current earliest iron-clad reference to potatoes in Europe is 1567,
the potatoes being shipped from the Canaries to Antwerp. The Netherlands
were then under Spanish/Habsburg control, with a number of the governors
being Austrian. This gives an example of a *possible* quick route, via the
Netherlands, from Spanish territory to Austria. >>>

Thanks. Any indication of whether these were white or sweet potatoes?

Thanks,
  Stefan
