I seem to remember reading that lead was also used to help seal wine in amphora and also as a sweetening agent in wines - suspending lead in an acid bath was probably not useful for population growth. (It was a medical journal that I read so I can't find the source now that I've switched persona to Viking-era Norse. I gave my papers to someone else for their persona research.)
