Damian's condemnation is pretty well known but it had more to do with condemning luxury in general. Nor can it be taken as a general Catholic stance anymore than Savonarola's condemnations; Damian was arguably, as one commenter here says, "a nasty little prig". But fortunately one who was fairly specific in his condemnations and so documents, for instance, the use of spices in Europe before the Crusades. (Guess how he felt about it...)


 But I doubt you'll find any Church Canon, for instance, that says anything about eating with the hands. Whereas one does find, for instance, limits on bathing, partially because it was considered unseemly attention to bodily needs and partially because (when done in groups) it could lead to... well, whatever naked men might do together if left to their own devices.
