Many thanks! There's even a Wikipedia article about paddu, which has links to aebelskiver, poffertjes (Dutch), takoyaki, and pinyaram (Indonesia).

Paddu, unni appam.

Not that I think takoyaki were/are made in South Asia, but I finally dug out (ok, found) my aebelskiver pan, and noticed the original price tag on the bottom was in rupees. Is there anything from the area, either historical or modern, that would be cooked in that sort of pan? The wells aren't that large (1.5-2").
