Yes. It was used in producing an ammonia solution a little earlier. I
haven't found any reference earlier than the 16th Century. If there is one
it is likely to be found in medical or distillation texts.

Is that a reference to using it as a chemical leavening? My vague memory
is that it had another use earlier.
