I got a starting list on scribal books-haven't really edited the list
fully yet...I got tired of typing titles, putting them in sections and
throwing all these damn books all over the place, there's barely room to
walk around now...I'm quiting for awhile and playing...how's this:

Technical Information (materials & tools):

The Craftsman's Handbook (Il Libro dell'Arte).  Cennino d'Andrea Cenni
translated by Daniel Thompson.  Dover Publication.  Translation of a
manscript, information on medieval pigments and how they were made.  

Materials and Techniques of Medieval Painting.  Daniel Thompson.  Dover
Publication.  Information on medieval pigments and how they were made,
use with the Craftsman Handbook..

The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques by Ralph Mayer.
Penguin Books USA Inc.   Heavy and jammed packed full on information on
materials you use in pigments, paper, brushes etc.etc.etc.  This is not
a historical source book, but it will give you everything you ever
needed to know about materials and pigments.

Artist Beware! by Michael, Ph.D, C.I.H. McCann.  You do ANY artwork,
with medieval materials/tools this! is the book to read  what material
is  hazardous to your health.  DON'T work with any medieval pigments
without reading this FIRST.

Make Your Own Artist's Tools and Materials by Vance Studley.  So you
want to make your own agate burnishers, quills, bone folders, brushes
etc.etc....this is the book you need to get.  With 367 illustrations,
this book goes through step by step and shows you how to create your own
tools.

Secreta -Three Methods of Laying Gold Leaf by Joyce Garfe.  Highly
informational with recipies covering and showing how to use gum
ammoniac, gesso and hyplar (modern) methods for laying on gold leaf-has
pictures throughout with full instructions and tools.

Techniques of Raised Gilding by Jerry Tresser.  Another good book on the
using and preparation of gesso for gold leaf.  Chapters also have use of
gold, gilding tools, dyeing vellum and using glare.

Writing & Illuminating & Lettering by Edward Johnson.  This book is the
historical 1900's book that revived calligraphy, and that many more
recent current books use as a reference to describe quill cutting and
various other calligraphy techniques.  

The Calligraphers Handbook by Heather Child.  A series of articles from
well known professional callgraphers are in this book, parchment
/vellum-how to stretch and prepare it are just one of the articles.  One
of those all round good to own books.

Scribes and Illuminators by Chistopher de Hamel  Excellent historical
information read (not a how to do) on medieval scribes and the
manuscripts they created-dealing with paper/parchment makers, ink
makers, illuinators, binders, booksellers and how they went about doing
their work. .

Hildebrandt.  All those 
neat little flourishes, wavy curves and artistic pen designs?  This book
teaches the how to do them and do them perfectly.

Story of Writing by Donald Jackson-shows you how the written word
evolved through history.

Historical Scripts : A Handbook for Calligraphers by  Stan Knight /
Published 1986  perfect for the scribe who wants to do calligraphy from
an view of a manuscript.  This is the second book I recommend after a
scribe advances beyond Marc Drogins medieval calligraphy basic
introduction book.

Islamic Calligraphy  by  Yasin Hamid Safadi  Published 1987. One of the
only books i've ever gotten  that presents islamic calligraphy with a
heavy historical factual information on the different scripts. This does
not teach you how to, but it's one fantastic read-along with the
manuscripts shown as examples.

Japanese Calligraphy : Practice, Learning and Art : A General
Instruction Manual   M.J.
 Sullivan / Published 1993  For those who really want to see what
japanesse calligraphy is like, with the brush, get this book.

Roman Capitals Stroke by Stroke  Arthur Baker / Paperback / Published
1984  Excellent little paperback that really cleans up and shows you how
to do roman initials.

An Italic Copybook the Cataneo Manuscript by Stephen Harvard- fascimile
of manscript with showing italic hands.  Very challenging to
calligraphers.
