Not a film, but a VeryGood Fantasy novel: "When the King Comes Home" by 
by Caroline Stevermer. It's set in an imaginary but richly written 
European country (they have treaties with Vienna and fought the Turks), 
in what feels like the late 16th through the late 17th c. The main 
character is an artist's apprentice and it's written as a memoir, so we 
hear much of her studies and duties in the part of the book that covers 
her early life (before the 'adventure' alluded to in the title, with all 
the attendant sorcery and battles, begins).

It's short and slim, and I recommend it for anyone who has a few hours 
to fill. Also good for reading to children, or handing to teenagers who 
read.
