Maridonna had a good idea for a class, one that would be good for this
year's Heraldic and Scribal Symposium.
I've been asked by a couple of people to throw some ideas on classes for
this year's symposium and I've listed some below. (I'm sure there are others.)
How to research in a library. What to look for in doing research of any type.
The Heraldic Library - a discussion of good sources for the beginning
herald, what to look for in a good source. Basic books and the BAD BOOK
LIST and why they are bad.
Field Heraldry - Rapport between list mistress and herald. obligations of
the field herald to the Noble. Basic and simple ways to organize
announcing for a list.
Voice heraldry - How to Project your voice in a safe manner. What to say
and how to say it. Basic dramatics for the Court Herald.
Naming practises -- I've seen a lot of people looking for Italian personas
these days maybe a general class on names, and heraldic practises within
period. I know people have asked me for research on common names that have
proved difficult. Perhaps a slant could be on how to encourage people to
do research. Any naming practises form any culture would be of benefit
An heraldic bee_ sort of like a spelling bee. Start with simple devices
and go up until you find the herald who can blazon the really difficult
ones. Good practise for people.
The Submission process. - How to get people interested in submitting their
device, problems and pitfalls, and how to resolve them. this might be a
good round table for a few heralds to discuss problems they have
encountered and how to soothe the angry submitter.
How to dress a Herald: How to make a heraldic tabard.
Heraldic embroidery. Teach some basic stitches and offer patterns of some
basic charges. How to use filling stitches so it looks good.
A historical survey of a particular Charge: Did you know the Lions of
England aren't really lions? How often was it used and by whom.
Working with Equestrian lists: something several Baronies are starting to
experience.
Simple Blazons: An introduction on blazoning.
How to design your device.
Non-european heraldry. Or Continental Heraldry
Historical heraldry. The Visitations of the heralds in England.
For scribes:
Diapering and backgrounds:
Simple hands
An overview of types of Pens and Inks on the market - what works what doesn't.
Paper - how to pick paper for charters, scrolls and such.
Scrolls in period. Or illumination in period.
Just some ideas for people to think about teaching.

Clare
