In particular, scribes and illuminators might be interested in these
books. They are the "best" books the British Library carries on these
subjects. Patricia Lovett is the professional calligrapher that the
British Library hires to do work for them. Her books have a very
practical "so you want to be able to reproduce this" flavor to them.
Notice that they are less than half price.
The Historical Sourcebook for Scribes
by MIchelle P Brown and Patricia Lovett
Analysing scripts from half-uncial to insular miniscule, the authors
take the reader on an educational voyage of the penman's art. All
alphabet styles in use today - both in calligraphy and in typeface
design - have their origins in the past. This study looks at the
proportions and weight of letters, the angle at which the pen nib was
held, whether it was written slowly or with a degree of speed,
devoting a whole page to exemplar letters of each alphabet style and
showing how the hand can be used today. 128p, b/w and col pls

The British Library Companion to Calligraphy, Illumination and Heraldry
by Patricia Lovett
Calligraphy and illumination together with heraldry comprise the
three traditional skills of medieval book arts. In this wide-ranging

a clearly written text that enables the reader to use this book both
as a working guide and a fundamental source of reference. Sections
include the range and selection of tools and material for
calligraphy, illumination and heraldry and there are practical
projects ranging from the simplest through to the more technically
advanced. 320p, 175 col illus (British Library 2000)
