SR - Principality

Wow. I go away for supper and come back to find all the decisions made
without me. :-)
1. I REALLY (no, I mean REALLY) would like to be on the committee (will
even volunteer to head it) to come up with a draft set of principality
laws. Per Corpora, a set of laws is one of the three "necessaries" along
with arms and name passed that MUST accompany a principality petition when
submitted to the Kingdom seneschal for consideration. I have the laws of
several of the Kingdoms and have been a part of the deliberating body
(Curia) of a Principality when new legislation has been drafted, debated,
and accepted. With a good flat bed scanner and a file (to take off the
serial number) we can have a working set to tweak in next to no time. Is
this worth doing now?
2. I agree with Meadbh. Let's not divy up all these jobs before the next
public meeting. There's nothing wrong with us, as interested and active
citizens of the region, getting a head start. But let's not firm up any
committees before that meeting. Just my opinion.
3. You're right, Pug. The star issuing from the bottom just doesn't look
right. Oh well. Back to the drawing board! As much as I am attached to
Ansteorra, I am not personally convinced that we need a heraldic link ON
THE ARMS. That link might be more easily represented in the achievement.
4. No matter how you cut it, I can find no easily pronouncable, cool
sounding RUSSIAN name suggestions. Drats! Our big chance! ;-)
5. This one may be way out there, but I've been reading some Cariadoc
lately. I don't know how many of you are familiar with Cariadoc's
recommendations for the reorganization of the SCA Kingdoms into Counties.
BEAR WITH ME HERE! I'm not advocating that here, but am suggesting that in
these early stages, we could shoot for something never before seen in the
SCA. Let your minds wander. This is how Palatine Baronies and Crown
Principalities got started. There is even a totally democratic city-state
in Lochac. BoD precedent has shown that as long as petitioners for such
oddities can present a strong historical and administrative model in
balance with and not counter to the "standard" SCA monarchies, then they
are willing to take a chance on the new. Just a thought. By the way, if
you haven't read Cariadoc's county proposals, they are really worth the
read. Search on Cariadoc.
6. As far as the regional cohesive yadda yadda goes.., I personally always
envisioned the forming of a principality to be much like the forming of the
round table in Excalibur. In that movie, Arthur and his knights had just
won the last battle which unified all of England. They were standing there
each thinking to himself, "We've got something here." Arthur just gave it
a name. That's the question I ask myself when I think about the issues
surrounding the creation of a principality. Do we HAVE something here?
Something that only wants a name? I think this is a personal question.
Those of us who can answer yes must temper our actions with regard to those
who have answered no or who are undecided. That should, however, not stop
us from pursuing our visions.
