Unless some very explicit rules are set out and followed and there is a
strong moderator who can keep the discussion on task, I feel that it would
simply turn into a bantering back and forth between those people with
opposite opinions - just like on the lists.
I certainly agree with your statement, but I don't see why this disadvantage would apply only to online discussions. The very same is completely necessary to run a discussion in person, at an event.
I think that this could become a very useful tool for getting these necessary, but small, details out of the way. It certainly could not take the place entirely of face-to-face meetings; as too much is lost in the translation. I'm pretty sure that group reps could more easily plan an hour and a half to be by the computer than a weekend event that's an hour and a half away. I wouldn't dream of planning the entire SRC event online, but I don't think we'd be reaching out on a limb to figure out how we want to vote for a name. Most chat programs even allow you to log the entire session, which could be distributed to the local seneschals and the entire populace. Take suggestions, and jump back on the net a week or two later to finalize the procedure. Maybe we decide not to use it for this issue, but I just hate to see us rely on period communication methods for day-to-day business. I'm in no particular rush, but we'll be spinning our wheels otherwise.

trying not to oppositional - but ready to get this thing organized and on
the move. :)
Me either; I just think Pendaran's idea could help us get many of the little things taken care of, rather than waste the valuable time at meetings, when we have everyone in person. Video conferencing equipment is still a bit pricey. :)
