I would also note that a *new* name that goes thru the heraldic
registration process may get the exact spelling changed (due to
grammar or period sources, say), or the name could be returned.
So it's best not to get one's heart too set on a particular new name.

That's for a *new* name, mind you.  If a merged group uses the
complete existing name of one of the components, this can't happen:
it's "grandfathered", to use the College of Arms terminology.

If an SCA branch wants to register, change, or release its branch name
or branch arms, a petition with specific wording has to be circulated
in certain ways.  If SCA branches merge, at least one of those
happens.  The regional herald or Star Principal Herald can give the
details if a merger is decided on.
