Actually, "Father Christmas" and "Santa Claus" aren't period concepts. 
In the book _A_Battle_for_Christmas by Stephen Nissenbaum, he shows that 
many Christmas customs thought to be ancient really aren't.  It's an 
interesting book, though not an easy read, and is copiously footnoted. 
If you care to read it, both the Houston and Fort Bend County libraries

Having said that, I personally have no problem with a Father Christmas 
themed Yule.
