[Steppes] Garb question - materials

Thank you m'Lady,

I did find the right color, however, and it's a silky purple sheen (similar to the brocade). Black would have been too dark for it. The purple almost disappears on the black background. I'm washing the fabric right now. I also got some really fantastic gold braid trim for it. Wait till you see it - it's not your normal gold braid. Now... should I add tie-on sleeves underneath... hmmmm.

Notice to all -- the new "Super Jo-Ann's" are having a sale right now. And if you go to Albertson's, you can get last Sunday's paper for $1. There's a 40% off coupon for any item in their store. So, I got that $7 trim for about $4 a yard.

just as a comment, my Lady

what would you think of matching the background color (if I understand the
description correctly, the background is black) or...go to the opposet side
of the color spectrum to contrast....white velveteen or one of the
yellow/blue combinations....aquamarine or teal? perhaps one of the
red/yellow combins? Peach would be beautiful with your skin tones...

Galen
(who perhaps, should keep quiet.....)

(it's purple cross fleuries within a diamond-pattern on black). Now that I
have recovered my sewing machine from under all of my teaching stacks, I am
ready to use it on a nice flowing Houppelande. I actually saw a dress of
this style made with the same trim.

it's a blue-violet and not a red-violet (which is easier to find). It was
suggested that if I can't match the purple, I should try a bright royal blue
for contrast. I'm going fabric hunting (again) and I'm not sure if a raw
silk would work (not too shimmery), a satin, a velveteen, a linen, a panne,
a dupiony silk (sp?)... or even a nice brushed blue-violet cotton. I plan
to use the brocade around the neck and at the hem.
