It might also be Greek.  In iconography, which comes from the Eastern Orthodox
Church, Greek is usually used in haloes.  Of course, I can't see the writing
well enough to tell.  After 1054, the Eastern and Western Churches were split
and not restricted by each other's artistic guidelines.
