OK, I'll bite! To whomever it may interest, after
watching a NOVA program on building a medieval
trebuchet Vinny, Nuala, and myself all approached a
bunch of weirdos I had remembered observing at Flag
Pole Hill many years earlier wearing medieval
clothes, makeshift armor, and whacking each other
with sticks. We thought if anyone local might know
about building one of these fun looking devises for
flinging heavy objects it would likely be one of
these lunatics.
Finding no one at the hill on our first attempt
(everyone being at Canton for the 20th Warlord),
they did return upon the following weekend. We
met, we talked, found them to be pleasant &
interesting company despite their strange clothing
& behavior. So we returned, attended a few of
their events, donned some funny clothes, got into
the armor & whacked other guys with sticks. Before
ya knew it we're raising our mugs and singing "One
of us" with the best of them, er' I guess that
would be best of us, oh well here we've been ever
since!
We never did build that big trebuchet yet, but each
of us did find our own little niche within the
Society. I couldn't really imagine not being part
of the SCA anymore, my only regret now being that
it took nearly twenty years from my first contact
with the SCA to actually joining the Society.
Well, that's how we got started, who's next!
Regards,
