[Steppes] Gate Issues (was Discouraging / Encouraging)

To Sir Morgan, Knight of the Realm, and to Honorable Lady Saqra, and those
who wish to read this missive, I bring greetings.

<sigh> a class in etiquette is needed by a good many of the 'modern world'
people I have to deal with. I think it's the way the world is going. I
agree that we would love to hope not in the SCA, but folks really are who
they really are. Tired and grumpy is tired and grumpy and the effort needed
to overcome that and be nice to folks just doesn't seem to be on the list
these days.

OTOH, we used to teach a "SCA 101" class that covered the graces and
courtesies, traditions, ranks, etc. Bringing that back may not be a bad
idea. I rather imagine newer folks would like to attend it, and some of us
with Swiss cheese for brains would welcome the refresher, too!

Sir Morgan, you couldn't be more right!  We shouldn't need a class in being
polite and courteous.  However, it wouldn't hurt to teach a class in
interpersonal dynamics and how to diffuse a potential "situation", which is
what appears to be needed.  Many of us may not know or may have forgotten
some of the techniques used in the business world to diffuse difficult
situations.

Also, there are proper channels in which to make a legitimate complaint
against an officer, noble, or peer, and it wouldn't hurt to have a reminder
of what those are.

As Baroness Alys pointed out, gate is an opportunity for bad communication
o occur on both sides of the coin. There's plenty of blame in this world
nd situations where the gate person is fully at fault, situations where the
erson going through the gate is fully at fault, situations where the fault
s shared in the big grey area in beteween. Her advise is sage. Meet these
ituations with politeness FIRST.
Certainly there are times when a confrontation will become necessary. But
what bothers me is that people who would strive to be exceptionally
olite in the game-side of things, just through "those doors", would not let
he magic of the SCA change thier hearts and lives, and let that be the
uiding light for their more modern lives, like paying real world money to
et to participate in their hobby, or taking money so their chapter of a
lub can afford to host an event.
Do we need a CLASS for this? Gosh I hope not. I hope that when I fail that

y friends will gentely remind me, and I pray I'm noble enough to recognize
he FAVOR I'm being done.
Morgan
