I was interested in making my panel a little broader this year. I was hoping on making it on playing the persona of a bard. How to incorporate the historical bard/performer into a LARP character. I would talk about the reality of bard craft in the SCA. This is just an idea and if people don't like please tell me how I can change it.

I am hoping to talk people who want to really do things into trying us out.

I think one of our strongest recruiting point is that we really do things. We can't beat the fantasy aspects. We aren't really the best Craft place. We really aren't the best spiritual arena. Our fighting lacks some of the charm of the live steel historical groups and the romance of Horse Tourney companies but do have a strong reality. Our swords aren't steel but we fight at full speed and at full contact. Our fighting is an martial art in that it has a code of behavior and levels of excellence with is supported by a real live populace. We have real people that individuals can do real things with and still live in a magically place.

As a bard this is important because if I am good I can bring real tears to someone.

I also think we should stress the study of history rather than the social aspect. If a young person comes to the SCA looking for "friends" they soon discover that a large part of our populace is over 30. They often get disappointed and leave quickly. If a young person comes looking to "learn" about history and things then the older people look like a wealth of teachers. Age, knowledge and wisdom becomes as asset.
