Wow, hi Fritz! Good to hear from you.
I knew that there was a longer name for the material, thanks for letting us know. I've built scrims, but never bought any of the fabric.
We hope to see you at 12th Night, at the least!

I know most of think we're dead or at least AWOL but we're still here and trying to raise kids , finish our house (I know some of you old timers will LYAO on that one) and survive the recession.
But I do have an answer for you Katya.
The material Saqra is talking about is called "shark tooth scrim" and is available locally at Scenic Source among other places. It is flame retardant but is very transparent and won't do a thing for noise abatement . It would sort of help with the dust.
It is essentially a open weave fabric net (think panty hose hung from the ceiling). I might suggest welders screen. It's a transparent plastic, flame retardant and comes in a couple of cool dark colors that your students will love. Northern Hydraulics and Harbor Freight would be good, inexpensive sources for it. A quick google search turned up 60"x75' at $200.

Miss you guys, perhaps we'll see ya soon as we come up for air.

Well, my suggestion would be theatrical supply stores for the fabric that they use to make scrims. I don't know what the price would be, but it is what I would call semi transparent (especially when backlit), already fire resistant (has to be to be on stage!), and comes in really wide widths. Perhaps Baron Fritz would know a resource for it.

I have been asked to make a change in my classroom. I currently have plastic
urtains (clear plastic similar to stuff raincoats and shower curtains are made
rom) hanging in my room to separate the shop from the computers. It cuts down
n the dust and some of the noise. The curtains are temporarily attached to the
rid ceiling.
he Fire Marshal (God love him) has told us that all curtains must be made of a
ire resistant/fire retardant material. That includes mine. Do you know of a
aterial that fits my requirements?
. Fabric must be fire resistant/fire retardant or have the ability to receive
treatment to become so
. be see-through enough so that I can monitor the kids in the shop as well as
he kids in the classroom/computers
. be cleanable (dry cleaning is OK)
. and is cost effective. I will need about 15 yards of the stuff (at 50in
ide). approx 22' x 8'
know that you love a challenge. I'm certain that someone - out there in the
ther - has worked with, knows of a vendor, or has a friend-of-a-friend that can
elp. I have to think outside the box on this one. My goal is to avoid
uilding a wall.
ooking forward to your creative ideas.
