That is correct. Ten feet -- which is pretty close.

Good point, but the banner bearer is not usually in the front rank.

White diamonds MUST be fully armored. The die within 10 feet, cannot 
carry a rattan weapon and may not be struck, but they still have to 
be armored just in case.

I think the biggest problem would be finding folks who are willing to 
armor up, have all the armor, and are willing to miss out on the 
fighting. This with the understanding that they CAN still be shot 
and might be struck with rattan by accident (battles are not safe 
places to be).
